Meet
the maker.
In an early post, Alex explains that he could not find a hat that felt entirely right, so he made his own.

An imagined story of Alex, the mountains, and an object that holds a memory.
A path the map did not show.
Alex went into the mountains with a small backpack and an old felt hat. He planned to return before dark. That morning, the trail was dry, the air smelled of juniper, and the peaks looked close enough to touch.
By noon, the wind had changed. Cloud swallowed the pass and rain drove almost sideways. Then the storm broke: pines bent towards the ground, stones rattled down the slope, and water erased the familiar trail. Alex sheltered behind an outcrop. Below him, wolves moved along the forest edge. They, too, were escaping the weather.
Then he heard a voice through the wind. Not a howl or a creaking tree. Someone was calling for her mother.
The choice to stop.
The girl was sitting on a narrow ledge below the trail. Separated from her family, she had slipped and was now afraid to move. Alex climbed down to her. On the way back, they stopped again and again, waiting for the gusts to ease. She held his shoulders so tightly that her fingers stayed curled long afterwards.
They could not reach the village before nightfall. Instead, Alex found an old shepherd’s hut. He wrapped the girl in his jacket, blocked a gap in the door with his backpack, and set his hat beside her. Its ribbon had torn and its brim had lost its shape, but a little dry warmth remained inside.
Branches scraped against the wall. Once, a wolf howled very close by. Alex moved nearer the door. The girl asked whether he was frightened. “I am,” he said. “But there are two of us here.” She did not ask again.
They waited out the night. At dawn, the wind fell and voices from a search party carried across the slope. Alex stepped outside and raised his battered hat above his head.
A hat he could not throw away.
A few weeks later, a letter arrived. Inside were a drawing of mountains, two small people beside a hut, and a narrow blue ribbon. The girl asked him to mend his hat. It looked beautiful in her drawing; she wanted it to look that way in real life, too.
Alex searched for someone to repair it, then tried for himself. He unpicked the old stitches and learned how felt responds to steam. Several times he spoiled the shape and started again. He kept the blue ribbon and tucked a small copy of the drawing beneath the lining.
When the hat was finished, a friend asked for one like it. Alex agreed, but first he asked, “What story will yours carry?”
That is how the first workshop begins in this tale. Felt, thread and scissors lay on the table. Outside was an ordinary city. Somewhere far beyond the pass, the wind was still moving through the pines.
